Event Description: Most swimmers count laps in a heated pool equipped with lane markers and a clear view of the bottom. Some hearty souls enter distance events like triathlons. Then there are extreme athletes like Darren Miller of Delmont, who swim in open-water, braving rough seas and unseen predators from the deep. Mr. Miller completed his 6th swim of the Ocean’s Seven Challenges across the 18-mile Cook Strait in New Zealand on March 20th. His time was 10 hours and 42 minutes. Mr. Miller will discuss his adventures and his motivation for taking on such endeavors during his presentation.

Mr. Miller is a graduate of Franklin Regional High School and Penn State University. In 2005 he decided to get into shape by running a marathon, and got into marathon swimming after an injury sidelined the running. His interest in the sport expanded into long-distance open water swims.

The program is $3 for Westmoreland County Historical Society members and $5 for non-members; a portion of the admission will be donated to the Forever Fund/Team Forever. Together with a friend, Mr. Miller established the Forever Fund, a non-profit group that gives financial assistance to the families of infants undergoing cardiothoracic surgery at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. The Greensburg-based Trustmont Financial Group sponsors Mr. Miller, and the funds raised from the swims benefit the Forever Fund/Team Forever.
